A reading response is a way of writing about your thinking about a reading or a topic; it is your reaction(s) to a reading (note: it is not a summary of the reading). During the semester, you will write five journal responses communicating your intellectual reaction to a text and its ideas. Your responses should be a minimum of 350 words, and address questions such as (these are suggestions – select those questions relevant to your response):
How do you feel about what you read (and what do you think provoked this response in you)?
Did the reading reflect or challenge your own ideas and assumptions about a specific topic?
Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue? Did it change your perspective in some way?
What do you think the reading does particularly well, and what are the weaknesses of the text?
(Required) What connections do you see between the reading and other themes occurring in the course discussion/readings? (you can also make connections to your past experiences, material in other courses, etc.)
The topic/reading you respond to is up to you – I recommend selecting articles or texts that really resonate with you in some way, or that challenge your way of thinking. One reading/text is required, though you can reflect on two readings if space allows or the ideas/topics you discuss are similar. Make sure to support your answers with specific examples and evidence from the text(s) you select.
