Greetings everyone!
There are two parts to this discussion thread on diversity. Please make sure to address both of them. Take your time and really immerse yourself in the experiences.
Part 1
Think of your earliest memory when another person singled you out for being different (good, bad or indifferent) than them. Put yourself in their shoes briefly. Was it meant for their own personal gain? Were you being complimented for an exemplary feat? Describe this experience and discuss any motivations or provocations that you remember or interpret, now that you possess hindsight. What insight did you garner from this experience?
While briefly reliving this experience, remember that you are worth it. We are all people on a baseline level and experience happiness, sadness, anger, anxiety and depression. What makes us unique is how we choose to internalize these feelings and decide the resulting actions. We all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
Part 2
Take out a piece of paper and something to write (pen, pencil, etc.). Follow the next steps without jumping ahead.
1) Write out a simple word, such as leisure, accompanied by a symbol, such as a dollar sign (e.g., leisure $).
2) Now, unfortunately, you have lost the ability to use your dominant hand to write. Instead, you must use your other hand to duplicate the word and symbol. Please do so at this time.
3) Yet again, unfortunately, you have lost the ability to write with either hand and must be resourceful. How? You must attempt to duplicate the original word and symbol by placing the writing utensil in your mouth. Yes, I am serious. Believe it or not, there are many people who do not have arms and hands or lack full functioning to complete the first two tasks. It might be hard but just try it. Also, I suggest using your own personal writing utensils.
4) Now that you have experienced an alternative way to communicate in written form, try to use your feet, yes, your feet. I have colleagues who sign every check with their feet, not out of creativity but out of survival and necessity. I will leave it up to you to give it a valiant effort.
5) Compare the attempts. Do you realize that you are more capable than you initially thought? What was the hardest attempt? Keep in mind that abilities can be modified every day and we are not guaranteed anything tomorrow.
6) Try something else to challenge your abilities that you might currently take for granted (e.g. try putting together a puzzle from start to finish with no sight, dribble a basketball without the use of your hands, communicate with someone else utilizing only a communication board or just nonverbally, etc.). What was your attempt and how did it put your current abilities into perspective?
7) Post your experiences and answers to the corresponding questions as a reply to this discussion thread. Unfortunately, emailed attempts will not count for credit.
I hope all of you have a good time with this and challenge yourselves.
