Essay: Censorship Online
Prompt: Do digital media platforms like Google, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter have an obligation to shape and sometimes restrict content? Or, do such obligations run counter to the legal promise of free speech? What, if anything, should these companies be doing differently?
For this assignment, you will draw on class lectures and readings about search, filters, algorithms, platform moderation, de-platforming, Section 230, and cancel culture to consider the role digital media companies play in disseminating and/or suppressing speech. (ALL FILES ARE ATTACHED BELOW) Then, you will compose a 5-7 page, thesis-driven essay that advances an argument about censorship and the online environment.
You do not have to address all of the topics or questions listed in this prompt – in fact, a good paper will not. Rather, use these questions as a starting point for developing a thoughtful, focused, well-supported argument related to censorship online.
Papers should be typed and double-spaced with 12-point font and 1-inch margins. If you do outside research, your sources should be cited properly (I don’t care which style you use, just be consistent).
