This assignment will provide an opportunity to engage in a common experience in the delivery of human services. Listening to a person’s story is a vital part of the helping process. The ability to listen and process information concluding appropriately what is being communicated is a vital skill across multiple disciplines. Acquiring this skill and the ability to utilize good critical thinking skills represent important knowledge and skills in the corporate world, business, education, science, health care and human services delivery. The ability to engage in critical thinking, gathering of data, analysis of the data, the linkage of research, theories and evidence-based practices applicable to the facts of the client’s story, is a complex, multilevel process.
This assignment will provide a window into how this process occurs. During this course, we have studied concepts, theories and explored research that prepares the professional to use his tool kit to understand and apply knowledge in helping people. The Life course perspective is based upon an understanding that a person’s life course trajectory is dictated by what happens to them throughout their lives. As you hear your subject’s life story, whether through a video biography or through a personal interview you will have the opportunity to think and analyze the validity of the life course perspective, as it is demonstrated in the lives of real people and their life course experience. You will have the opportunity to highlight the significance of life events that shape a person’s life. Vulnerabilities are created based upon these life events but also evidence of resilience. This pattern is commonly what can be observed in most of our lives. This assignment provides an expanded opportunity to learn about how vulnerabilities occur during the life course and how they can impact the life course experience, introducing risk and resilience factors.
In your paper, relate the study of human behavior and development, as explored through this course, to the person and their life experiences. Use Hutchison’s dimensions of the person and dimensions of the environment to examine the main issue(s) presented in the film/video/book. For example, consider biological, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, political, and economic aspects of development. How might the conditions of the physical environment or community conditions affect the behavior and developmental trajectories of individuals represented in your example? You do not need to include all of the dimensions of the person and environment as presented in the Hutchison chapters. Please select the dimensions that are most relevant to understanding the life story. Explain the implications for social workers in seeking to improve the “goodness of fit” between the individuals and their environment.
Please organize your paper according to the following:
Provide a short description of the life story (~1/2 page)
Provide an analysis of the person dimensions that help us understand the life story
Provide an analysis of the environment dimensions that help us understand the life story
Offer a summary of implications for social work that gives a description of how viewing the life story through these multidimensional lenses, we can better understand and help the person/family
This paper should be 5-7 pages in length, include at least 5 academic sources (e.g., journal articles), double spaced, APA format for citations and references. Please see the Assignment section in Blackboard for links to example life stories.
In preparing for this assignment, please review two previously assigned readings on the life course perspective.

Determine whether you will choose to interview a subject or use a video life story as the focal point for doing this assignment. You must choose one.
You will focus your work for this assignment on a person’s life story and engage in analyzing their lives from childhood to adulthood, highlighting significant events that shaped their life course.Choose the source of the life story that will be the focus of your assignment. The life story can be obtained from a personal interview with a subject or a video life story biography. The story must provide a description of the person’s life story from childhood to adulthood and if obtained from a video source such as YouTube or a movie, should probably be at least 45 minutes long. Your goal is to have a window into the major life events in their story.
Once you have completed your interview or watched the video biography, you will write a paper based upon a clearly identified organizational format, identifying questions to be answered in each section of the final paper. You will write a short reflection (no more than 2 pages (IN THIS PAPER)) sharing what was the most significant part of your learning through completing this assignment.
