You have two options for your second paper. For both options, your essay should be about 4 pages long, double-spaced, 12 point font. Please use a professional font, such as Times, Arial, or Cambria. 1-inch margins. You MUST cite any source that you reference, even if it is just from Confessions. [You may use APA, MLA, or Chicago citation style so long as you are consistent throughout.] Upload your paper as a .doc or .pdf to Blackboard. Do not send me (Each day it is late I will subtract five points from your overall score.) Each paper is worth 15 % of your overall grade.
You may either 1) write an expository paper in which you consider the spiritual journey of Augustine’s life, OR 2) you will write your own “spiritual” biography and compare it with Augustine’s journey.
If you chose option 1) you will write about Augustine’s spiritual journey. Your expository paper should include an overall narration of Augustine’s journey which will entail reflection upon not only specific moments in his journey but also the overall arc. When addressing Augustine’s spiritual arc, you must consider three aspects of Augustine’s life: one moment from Augustine’s youth (Books I & II), the impact Augustine’s relationship with Monica had on his spiritual development (Books VI & VII), a reflection on faith and reason in his journey to Christianity (Books VIII & IX). In addition, you need to make at minimum one direct comparison to your own spiritual journey. [As we discussed in class, your spiritual journey does not necessarily have to relate to your religious journey, rather it could be your journey to better understand yourself and your purpose.]
If you chose option 2) you will write about your own spiritual journey.[As we discussed in class, your spiritual journey does not necessarily have to relate to your religious journey, rather it could be your journey to better understand yourself and your purpose.] In your paper about your spiritual journey, you should include at least three events, persons, or influences in your spiritual journey, a description of how each event/person, etc. impacted your journey, and a reflection on where you are now. In addition, you will need to make at minimum one direct comparison to Augustine’s journey in Confessions (this should include at least one quote.)
