Review the videos and read the textbook chapter carefully. Then read the Long Telegram.
In your post, please answer: In 1946 most Americans were focused on the return to global peace. They wanted good jobs, to enjoy family and friends. However, the cold war will dominate both foreign and domestic affairs for the next 30 years. Read The Long Telegram by George Kennan carefully. Identify the three aspects of the Soviet Union (whom had just recently been our ally) that would most frighten the average American. Explain why.
Note: These are difficult questions to answer. You will need to follow the instructions closely. You will have to read the textbook and the telegram carefully. Remember to focus on the time period 1946 to 1960. Pretend you do not know what is going to happen past 1960.

A global war had just destroyed many of the strongest international influences of the past century
Nuclear weapons, with their capacity for complete destruction, changed the nature of war
The United States was not accustomed to its role as a leader in international politics
Western Europe struggled to rebuild after WWII, with many people drawn to the ideal promises of communism
The Soviet Union was broadcasting the hypocrisy of the United States’ claims to freedom and equality, broadcasting news footage of African Americans and other groups being mistreated

2nd Part (Presidency Discussion)

The American Presidency has grown in power and statue over the last two hundred years. A President’s number one source of power is his/her capacity to translate political capital (popularity) into desired policy outcomes. Thus, the personal characteristics of a President often separate the great from the mediocre or bad Presidents.
What personal attributes do you believe make for a ‘great’ President? You must give examples of Presidents who possessed these traits and discuss how such attributes contributed to ‘greatness’ and why?
