Poke around and look at exhibitions and collection, until you
find a single work of art that interests you and give the artists name,
the title, and date at the beginning of a two-to-four-page paper. Briefly describe
the work of art, using some of the terminology we have learned, but do not do a
full visual analysis. Ask yourself if a reader who is not you could envision
the work without a picture. Then evaluate how the museum (whether on the
actual premises or on the website) contextualizes the work. This means:
how is it presented to the public? What information is given and where
is it placed (again, actually or virtually)what surrounds it? Does it seem to
form a place in a temporal narrative? Does it seem to help make a critical or
social point? Finally, make your own assessment of the works aesthetic
traditions. Compare it to any movement, civilization, or idea we have
encountered so far in class. Do you think this was the artists intention or is
it part of your interpretive freedom as a viewer?

All papers must be MSWord documents written in 12-pt font
with 1 inch margins, and always always always double-spaced.
