Six S’s Exercise.docx (142.839 KB)
Please choose ANY poem from our readings in Weeks 1 & 2 that you like or in which you are interested. You will complete the Six S’s exercise from the Hazelton article.
First, write the poem in a text block with no line breaks.
Then, rewrite the poem’s line breaks six ways, according to: speed, sound, syntax, surprise, sense and space.
You can interpret these the way you want, but generally:
Speed = to make the poem move more quickly or slowly
Sound = to change the way the poem sounds, create or destroy rhyme or rhythm
Syntax = to make sentences and grammar flow differently — more smoothly or more broken up
Surprise = to create surprising and new ideas, images, etc.
Sense = to change or enhance the meaning of the poem
Space = to make the poem take up a different space on the page
Please submit this as a SINGLE .doc file with one page per “S.” Please write the S-word at the top. If a version takes up more than one page, that’s fine — just start each new S on a fresh page.
