To complete this assignment, you will be writing a TWO TO THREE PAGE persuasive research essay on a topic to be determined by your teacher. There will be some in-class time devoted to this assignment, but most of this work will be completed out of class.
Regardless of the topic assigned, your research essay must contain the following components:
An introduction paragraph with a setting statement and background information
A thesis statement, appearing at the end of the introduction paragraph, with a topic, direction, and AT LEAST THREE divisions
At least THREE body paragraphs, corresponding with your thesis divisions with specific evidence and explanations to support your thesis argument
Use strong transitions both between and within body paragraphs
Begin each body paragraph with a clear, strong topic sentence
A strong, relevant conclusion paragraph
To show evidence of research, your essay must also include the following research-based components:
An MLA works cited page at the end of your essay with AT LEAST THREE sources
The use of your course textbook does NOT count as one of the three required sources, as much of the information in your textbook is considered common knowledge
At least ONE of these sources must be from one of the PHS library databases
You should use EasyBib to create this works cited page
For each thesis division, you will be required to parenthetically cite AT LEAST TWO pieces of information from your research to support your thesis, following MLA citation formatting.
There should be AT LEAST ONE piece of evidence included and cited in the essay from each of the THREE sources included on the works cited page. This means that you must have AT LEAST SIX TOTAL parenthetical citations in your body paragraphs.
The final essay should be formatted according to MLA guidelines with respect to font, font size, margins, and page headers. An MLA template will be provided. You will also be expected to demonstrate strong use of mechanics, including grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. The essay should be written in formal, third-person language.
This essay will be graded as a 100-point grade in its own grading category, worth 10% of the 2nd/4th marking period grade, according to the attached rubric. All papers will also be submitted to turnitin.com for a plagiarism check. Any papers found to be plagiarized will receive a 0. There will be a one letter grade penalty per day for any paper not submitted in its entirety, including turnitin.com, on the due date.
