Interactive Library
Throughout the course, you will be developing your own Interactive Library! Your Interactive Library will consist of a collection of children’s literature that you hand-pick based on what you are learning in this course, your personal preferences, and what you believe students will enjoy. All of the books you choose should embrace the standards of quality. Plan to read and explore at least thirty books for this project.
This assignment will broaden your knowledge of children’s literature, sharpen your skills in evaluating quality literature, and provide you the opportunity to create an interactive tool that is very relevant to the recent shift to online learning/remote learning/eLearning.
You are expected to work on this project throughout the term. It is due the Thursday of Week 10—you will post it both on the discussion board and in the assignment folder.
All of the books you include:
Must be entirely new to you (i.e., you have not read them before, and they are not in your classroom or personal collection).
Must be exciting to read (i.e., books that you really enjoy). In order to teach children to value and appreciate literature, it is critical that you model and share your enjoyment of literature.
Must be age-appropriate for your classroom or the age/grade level of children with whom you plan to work. Remember that you can read aloud chapter books to first-grade students and share picture books with ninth graders. However, the topic and themes should be age-appropriate. You will want to curate your library to focus on one age group
Take into consideration that students have varied interests and levels of reading abilities. It is suggested that you venture out and explore books from other grades/age groups. An interesting, subject-appropriate picture book could captivate older students, while some chapter books may provide great read-aloud experiences for younger children.
You may NOT use any of the books you include in Windows, Mirrors, and the Sliding Glass Doors assignment or The House on Mango Street.
In total, you will need to include at least 15 books, including:
1 realistic fiction
2 poetry/verse books
1 biography
1 fantasy/science fiction
4 different non-fiction (choose different formats or genres—see this link for more details)
1 historical fiction
1 folklore/traditional
(That leaves 4 books of your choice)
You need to create at least four recordings of you reading. For the other 11, you may find recordings of books that have already been done or you can record yourself.
Any easy way to record videos is to create a Zoom meeting with yourself. You can screen share to read an eBook. Just be sure to press record! Then, the video can be hosted on Google Drive or YouTube.
When you submit the interactive library link to the assignments folder, you also need to include a few sentences with a short explanation of why you included each text, as well as an APA reference for each text. Here are some prompts:
What is the genre of this book? How do you know?
What is something you found particularly interesting about the book?
What is something particularly noteworthy about the book (e.g., language, illustrations, theme, characters, etc.)?
What particular audience of children do you think would enjoy this book?
