Directions:
There are two parts to this project. First, using only the 20 inscriptions found below, which come from the late-17th, 18th, and early 19th-century gravestones and memorials in Bruton Parish Churchyard in Williamsburg, Virginia, describe what life was apparently like in colonial Virginia. Some questions to consider are:
How old were people when they died?
Is there any evidence of what they died from?
Is there evidence of an immigrant population?
Is there evidence of ethnic or racial or social or economic diversity?
Is there evidence of a social or political hierarchy?
Is there evidence of religion? Education? Multiple languages?
For this first section you may only use the data and information from the gravestone transcriptions below; you may not use additional resources. The goal is to interpret the evidence at hand.
When you have completed the initial section, which should be at least 500 words (normally 2 pages), add an additional paragraph to a page that discusses what, based on your study of colonial America in this course, is NOT revealed about colonial society through the “graven images.”
