Students are to write a narrative paper 4-6 pages (double-spaced) in length
The paper is due December 8 and will also require students to use Chicago Manual of Style for citations and paper organization. The Eyewitness Account paper thus asks students to practice “doing” history by formulating a research plan, analyzing and synthesizing sources, and completing a written narrative driven by evidence.

4-6 page paper with three sections, each section should include a short paragraph that discusses the sources used. Section one introduces your chosen individual and explains what their life may have been like up to the point of your chosen event. Section two places your individual in your chosen event. Event must be during the Civil War Era. Can be specific in time and place like a battle or a speech or more general, like “the spread of slavery into the Cotton Kingdom” or Reconstruction. Events can take place from roughly 1820 to 1880, and can include events not explicitly mentioned or described in the class materials. Section three places your individual in the wider Civil War Era and describes what your individual may have experienced over the arc of time covered in this class.

Those describing the experience of a real individual (say, Abraham Lincoln) should provide a brief account of their life and link it to themes and events described in class. Those describing the experience of an imagined individual as stand-in for a larger experience (say, an enslaved woman or Confederate soldier) should use outside and class source to briefly outline what life would have been like your chosen individual, also linking to class themes. Essays should then use document analysis and creativity within the bounds of the evidentiary record to place their individual into an event as an eyewitness. Set the scene as a writer and use primary and secondary source to describe the scene as they experienced it. Venture to describe what your individual may have been feeling. Finally, carry your individual forward in time. How might that event have changed their lives? Where might they have found themselves in these years after?
