Noca-Cola Case Study
Noca-Cola has a wide international market. They have plants in many developing countries around the world, as well as in the U.S. – although most of their manufacturing plants have moved outside of the U.S. to take advantage of the cheaper labor market overseas and production cost. Lately there have been complaints from the Indian locals who live in the area where Noca-Cola is produced – that the manufacturing plants are using up all the local water. Since the entire country is plagued with cyclical droughts – the citizens of the towns and villages where N-C is made are protesting. Famine and dehydration is a major on-going epidemic for economically underprivileged people in India. The major Indian newspapers are reporting this news – and already sales of N-C are dropping all over India. Noca-Cola knows they have to respond to this crisis immediately. They are in the process of investigating the evidence for the charge that the use of local water is depleting natural resources.
After a thorough investigation take place, it is found that Noca-Cola uses a very small supply of water in the formula for the soft drinks – and that it is a statistically insignificant amount relative to the water shortages in the country. However, the perception is that Noca-Cola is draining precious resources and it is damaging their reputation in India. Other “green” press sources have picked up the story and are circulating the ‘news’ on a global basis.
