For this paper, you should choose an argument from a recent article from the course, reconstruct the argument, provide an objection to it, and then respond to a criticism of your own objection.
The paper should begin with an introduction that includes a thesis statement. Then, you should reconstruct an important argument from one of the readings above. You do not need to reconstruct the entire article and you do not need to reconstruct the author’s main claim. Simply choose an important argument from the article to reconstruct. Here are some examples of arguments you could reconstruct:
· Hume’s argument that we do not have an idea of the self that persists over time
After you reconstruct the argument, you should provide an objection to it. The objection can be based on ideas we discussed in class, but you are also encouraged to develop an objection using your own ideas. For example, if you are writing on Descartes’ argument that the mind and body are distinct yet form a union, you could use Princess Elisabeth’s letter as an objection. However, you could also develop your own reasons why you think the mind and body are not distinct or do not form a union.
After you provide an objection to the argument, pose a criticism to your own objection. That is, explain how someone who disagrees with your objection might argue against it. Next, defend your objection. That is, state why the criticism of your objection is unsuccessful. Finally, end the paper with a brief conclusion.
This paper should be 5 pages, double spaced, 12-point font, and have 1-inch margins. You can go over the page limit by about ½ page without a penalty. Do not write less than 5 pages. As a general guideline, I would recommend the following lengths for each section of the paper:
· Introduction: ½ page
· Reconstruction of an Argument: 2 pages
· Objection: 1 page
· Criticism of Objection: ½ page
· Response to Criticism: ½ page
· Conclusion: ½ page
