Using the case of Jane Wiggins described here, respond to the following questions.
1. What client characteristics do you see in Jane Wiggins that would affect your choice of treatment
intervention strategies and also the overall therapeutic outcomes?
2. How would your training, your theoretical orientation to helping, and your practice setting affect your
choice of change intervention strategies?
3. How aware are you of any evidence-based treatments that would be useful here?
4. What questions would you ask about these treatments?
5. If you are not aware of any evidence-based treatments, how could you find some?
The Case of Jane Wiggins:
Jane Wiggins is a 34-year-old white American woman living in an isolated rural area. She has been
referred to the nearest mental health center because she sought treatment at the local health care clinic
following a rape. She is very suspicious of the helper, who is a white man, and she talks reluctantly
and without much eye contact. Gradually, she reveals that she is married, unemployed, has no
children, and lives with her husband, who receives Social Security disability payments because of his
very poor health. She has lived in this area all her life. She indicates that she has been followed for the
past year by a white man who also grew up in the area. She knows him by name and sight only. In
addition to following her, he has sent her numerous letters and has made phone calls containing lewd
and suggestive remarks. She indicates that she and her husband went to the sheriff ’s office several
times to complain, but the complaints were never followed-up. It appears that this man may be related
to a deputy in the sheriff ’s office. Several weeks ago her husband went over the hill to a neighbor’s
house to visit and, as was their custom, left the door unlocked. The man who has been following her apparently was around, noticed the husband’s departure, and came into her house and raped her. She
says she told no one other than the neighbor and her husband because she feels so ashamed. She
indicates she is a very religious person and has been reluctant to go to church or to confide in her minister for fear of what the church people may say. She also has been reluctant to tell her parents and
sister, who live nearby, for the same reason. She sees no point in reporting the rape to the authorities
because they dismissed her earlier reports. She feels a lot of guilt about the rape because she thinks she
should have been able to prevent it. She has been doing a lot of praying about this. As a few sessions go
by, she gradually becomes more open with the helper and indicates she is willing to come back for a few
more sessions to deal with her guilt and sadness; she would like to be able to feel happy again and not
be so consumed by guilt. She finally discloses she would feel more comfortable talking these things out
with another woman, as this is really a “female problem.”
