Discussion: Music as Social Protest
Essential Question: How is music used to inspire or create social change?
The world around us, especially in the United States, is currently undergoing tremendous social change. People who have historically been marginalized because of their identity–whether because of their race or ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental or physical health, age, and others–these people are rising up in protest and demanding fairer treatment by governments and society.
For this post, first read and watch the videos on this unit’s video page: Music as Social Protest
Then, write a post which addresses one of two writing prompts (don’t do both):
(Prompt 1): If you have been to a protest rally where there was music, talk about your experience. Who was making the music? Why were they making music? What was the response of the people? What was your response to the music? Do you think the music was effective at motivating the protestors?

(Prompt 2): If you have never been to a protest rally where there was music, consider the circumstance of the “Fees Must Fall” movement. Do you think students at WSSU would hold a rally to protest increased tuition and fees? If so, would they play music? What music would WSSU students play at a protest rally? Would listening to music help WSSU students holding a protest rally, and if so, why?
