Chapter 7 Quantitative Designs: Using Numbers to Provide Evidence
Title: Design Types and Use of Study Results
Purpose: Identify design types and decide use of results for practice
Werner, A., Uldbjerg, N., Zachariae, R., Rosen, G., & Nohr, E.A. (2013). Self-hypnosis for coping with labour pain: a randomised controlled trial [Abstract]. Review this abstract. Decide the research design type and characteristics and state rationale for their decisions. Is this study an experimental, quasi-experimental, or nonexperimental design? What type? Why might researchers select this design? Who is the population of interest? What are the study variables? What are the extraneous variables? Who comprised the control group?
What thoughts for your current practice do the results suggest? Other ideas to explore? Would you be willing to change your ob unit’s labor management protocol based on the results of this study? If so, why? If not, what type of evidence might lead you to change your protocol?
