Understanding the Impact of Culture on Student Behavior

What will you do?
Work with a partner to choose one of the following school settings. Select a partner who is in a school setting different than your own:
A rural school with a homogenous culture
An urban school in an economically challenged student population
An international school with multi-racial, multi-lingual, heterogenous student population
A high income school with a homogenous culture
Compare your own school with the different school setting you select from the perspective of how student behavior is linked with the overall culture of the school and the surrounding community.
Choose a sample behavior plan from PBISWorld.com, linked in the Activity Resources and modify it to match the needs of the selected school setting. You may want to create one general plan, or several separate plans. Highlight what changes you made in a summary at the end of the document with reasons for those changes.
Create a schedule for professional development of the faculty and staff on culturally appropriate behavior and behavior management. Identify how many workshops or events you will organize throughout the school year to ensure that faculty understand the impact of culture when dealing with students and parents. Include ways in which faculty can discuss challenges they face with specific students or parents.
