Please see the academic honesty section on the course syllabi. Excessive writing errors will result in point deductions. Seek help with writing at campus tutoring centers if needed.
Due Date: See Canvas. Late papers scores will lose 0.5 points and be reduced by 1 point for each additional day late. Late papers may not be returned until the end of the semester.
Exercises for Self-Application Papers (see instructions above)
Choose one of the following: Existential Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, or CBT Therapy
Existential Therapy
CHOOSE ONE of the following sets of issues and address them with specific details and examples. Be sure to include exploration of relevant key existential concepts and work them into your exploration.
If you are choosing Existential Therapy, please complete the activity/engage in reflection on either 1, 2, or 3 below only, not all three.
1) How fully alive do I feel? When do I feel most alive? Least alive? What parts within me are “dead” or “dying”? How do I prevent myself from experiencing life? What would happen if I chose to live fully instead of settling for a half-life/half-death existence? What would it take for me to experience a new surge of vitality in these areas?
2) Reflect on a critical turning point in your life. What decisions appear to be crucial to your present day development? How do you accept and exercise your own freedom and make significant decisions alone? Do you attempt to avoid living with freedom and responsibility, if so how? Are you inclined to give up some of your autonomy for the security of being taken care of by others?
3) What future do you want for yourself? What do you want to be able to say about yourself in relation to the significant people in your life? What would you like to have inscribed on your tombstone? What are you doing now, or what can you do now to make your vision a reality? If you could make one significant change in your personality or behavior now, what would it be? What do you see that you can do now to make that one change?
Person-Centered Therapy
Practice active listening and reflection in your life. Identify a situation in your life where active listening and reflection could be useful in a relationship with another person. This could be a relationship with a parent, friend, romantic partner, or co-worker. This should be a relationship where you normally do not practice active listening and reflection. Practice active listening and reflection while talking with this person. How did it impact the conversation? Was it different from normal? Was it a challenge for you to implement these skills in your life? Summarize the experience in your paper.
Gestalt Therapy
Select a problem or concern and do two things: 1) deliberately talk about your problem, and 2) attempt to put the problem in the here and now through using the empty chair technique/internal dialogue technique. Talk directly to that person or to a part of yourself. Talk it out in a role-play then type it up to turn in. Include a written sample of your talking directly in the here and now.
Behavioral Therapy
Systematic Desensitization – 1. Select a specific behavior or situation that evokes anxiety 2. Practice a relaxation procedure. 3. Construct a hierarchy from worst to least anxiety provoking triggers. 4. Apply relaxation procedure. Then do exposure (either in vivo or imagined) to the least anxiety provoking trigger. If you feel anxious stop and switch to relaxation. Continue this until you can maintain a sense of relaxation during exposure. 5. Move progressively up the hierarchy till you can at least imagine the highest step and induce a state of relaxation easily. In your paper, include your hierarchy and summary of the experience of working through a few steps.
CBT Therapy
Choose a specific recent disturbing situation and complete an “ABC” framework. Please don’t forget the “DEF” portion. Write out the specifics for each part of this exercise and include in your paper. Attempt to implement your healthy thinking when a similar situation arises in the future. What are the connections you see between your beliefs and the way you feel and act? Were you able to change your feelings and behaviors by changing your self-talk?
