THe Republic of sou“마약청정국” was a phrase used in the early 2000s by the prosecutors of South Korea to depict the use of illicit drugs in South Korea. However, its not the case anymore and it was never the case. The use of that phrase called the society as a drug free country. However, there were constant arrests regarding the use of illicit drugs. Yes, compared to other countries, the number of drug related cases were low, but it was not zero. Hence, it is said the this phrase is not applicable to Korean society. In fact, it has been the opposite. The number of drug related arrests and the use of illicit drugs have been on an upswing. Most of the known arrests are of the elites of. Celebrities, jaebuls, and rich adolescents. In other words, people who have a high income and fame. These arrests do not suppress the number of cases of drug use. As a matter of fact it opens up a so-called “drug culture” in Korea making illicit drugs more prevalent in Korean society. These powerful elites also create a market of supply and demand in the country. It future the situation by lowering the cost of drugs as well as the import of drugs
