Presidency Film Application Paper

Watch a movie surrounding the U.S. Presidency and write a response paper addressing the questions raised below. FWIW: This assignment was originally created using The American President, but I’m not sure people’s streaming options.

Your answers to these questions should be typed, double-spaced, and submitted via Canvas by the date indicated in the syllabus. Late papers will be accepted, but will be subject to the late penalty indicated in the syllabus. Your completed paper should be no more than four (4) pages in length (excluding your Reference Page). I would prefer you prepare a single essay, including an introduction and concluding paragraph, but you can devote as much or as little on each question as you’d like (assuming the minimum effort being at least you answer the question). Your grade on this assignment will be based on how thorough you cover the questions raised (application to the film and explanation of said application to any course concepts), the organization of your answer, and the quality of your writing. I strongly advise you to carefully read over and revise your assignment before turning it in…hit up the Writing Center!!! Proper citation, when needed, is a requirement…you may use whatever citation style you would like, it just needs to be correctly and consistently applied.
In your essay, think about and respond to each of the following questions:
Give a brief synopsis of the movie (no more than a paragraph or two).
In class we discussed a number of roles the president plays. Pick one of these roles and explain how it was depicted in the movie.
MindTap discusses a number of powers the president derives directly from the Constitution or based on those constitutionally-given powers. Pick one of these powers, classify it as either enumerated (expressed) or implied, and describe how the president in the movie used the power.
Identify one example of the president using his power of persuasion (Neustadt’s theory) or one example of the president “going public” (Kernell’s theory). Be sure to juxtapose the example with a brief explanation of both theories.
Give a brief review of the movie (this should be the shortest part of your paper). What did you like? What did you not like? Did you notice any fallacies about the way Hollywood portrayed the role or power of the president (don’t spend all weekend looking, if something isn’t obviously running counter to the course material, just say that, knowing that I have also watched the film and know the material…)?
Utilize at least one (1) academic source relating to one of the topics (roles, powers, Neustadt, or Kernell) to enhance your discussion of that topic. Using the Neustadt and Kernell readings from class does NOT count as the one academic source, but I strongly encourage you to reference them in your paper.
