Prison Gangs
Though it may seem that prisons are insulated from the activities of the street, in the gang world, this is not the case.
Which came first: the street gang or the prison gang? The answer depends on whom you ask. The Mexican Mafia, for example, was birthed in prison and yet flourishes on the street, as well. The Black Guerilla Family developed from street gangsters who, when sent to prison, banded together racially for their survival.
That is probably the fundamental difference between prison gangs and street gangs. Prison gangs are almost exclusively banded together by race. Indeed, most inmates find that they need to join “their” gang in prison for protection and survival.
