The Main Purposes for This Paper Are To: • assist students in being aware of current legislation and requirements about medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada. • assist students in being aware of upcoming changes to the MAiD legislation. • encourage students to carefully consider their own stance on these upcoming changes. • encourage students to explore ethical rationale for their stance. • encourage students to carefully consider what their own actions might be if/when faced with a situation in which MAiD is approved/carried out for someone under an advance request. • encourage students to situate their stance within national and provincial nursing standards for RNs with regard to MAiD. Part 1: Introduction (<½ page) • Is the stance clearly identified? Is the purpose of the paper clear? Part 2: Understanding of MAiD: Current and Proposed Changes (~<1½ pages) • Is there a strong demonstration of awareness of current legislation and requirements about MAiD? Is there strong understanding about the changes that are being planned to the MAiD legislation. Part 3: Stating and Supporting Your Stance About Expansion of MAiD (<2 pages) • Is there strong evidence for the argument for or against the expansion of MAiD legislation that will allow advance requests for MAiD to individuals suffering only from mental illness? Is the ethical theory used clearly identified? Does the ethical theory used strongly support the argument/stance? Are the ethical values clearly identified and provide strong support for the argument? (Supporting evidence must published within the last 10 years). Part 4: Identifying Own Involvement if MAiD Under an Advance Request (<1½ pages) • Is an understanding of one’s actions as an RN if/when involved in a situation with MAiD approved for a patient under an advance request clearly demonstrated? Is a clear rationale provided for chosen future actions and do proposed actions fit with the current CNA and CNO expectations for RNs? Part 5: Conclusion (<½ a page in length, in a single paragraph) • Are the main ideas presented clearly? Other requirements: - The ideas presented in the paper are clear, coherent and flow well. It is free from grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors. Critical analysis and depth are evident throughout the paper. - There is accurate use of APA 7 th edition citation and formatting. Margins are 1” on all sides. A recommended APA font size is used (11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, and 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, and 10-point Computer Modern). - The paper is five to six pages in length (excluding title page and reference list) and doublespaced.
