Articulate an analytical and comprehensive research paper in which you compare two buildings from different eras. Discuss both buildings within a comparative framework that builds on the premise the architectural works are influenced by previous ideas from recent or distant pasts. The discussion is meant to have you study the fundamentals of influential building principles and to have you make a structured discussion deeply analyzing the influences, ideas and principles. Be careful not choose buildings based purely on image. We have seen many buildings throughout history that deal with principles that other buildings have used, but do not necessary look similar. At least one of the buildings you choose must be one from an era discussed in the class. To focus your discussion, frame your argument within one of the themes discussed in class. For example, the theme “organic architecture” could be a discussion of how Frank Gehry used organic form vs. how another architect from the past used the organic theme to make architecture. Themes Consider these themes: :Organic influences in architecture :Co-Existence of Form, Function, and Structure : Site and Optical Illusions of Space : Spirituality in Architecture : Power : Structure and Technology Revolutionizing the Look of Architecture Note: remember that in the class, we discussed many Architectural elements (materials, scale, methods of construction, use of light, circulation/ritual, etc.) to show how these can be used to express each of the themes above. Your paper should discuss these architectural qualities to help you make your argument. Required Project Resources Research for this paper should include the use of at least 3 academic articles that can be accessed via the online libraries. •There are many resources available online through ELAC Libraries and databases. •Articles should be from reputable Art or Architecture Journals. •You may use web site references, but these must be in addition to the 3 articles. Projects that only use websites are not acceptable. •Do not use Wikipedia as a primary source. All Wikipedia information needs to be verified by you for accuracy. All references must be appropriately referenced. Paper Format -Illustrated Written Paper – (2500 words)-Use either Chicago style or MLA (Modern Language Association) essay formats. These are widely used for formal essays in academic settings. You may familiarize yourself with these styles by looking for templates either online or in Microsoft Word. Paper Length: 2500 words A page with standardized formatting of 1-inch margins and 12-point monospaced font and minimal use of headings or graphics, has an average word count is 250.
