To create a network of contacts associated with the career field.
The Assignment
Choose the career field you [plan to pursue upon graduation.
Select one expert in the career field to interview.
Research the career field at the library. You need to find at least 3 great sources.
Use the research to prepare for the interview.
Write in a detailed fashion your results as described below.
IMPORTANT
Because of the importance of listening and comprehending oral information in the business world, there will be a detailed in-class explanation of the assignment that will contain information NOT included on this sheet. Obviously how well you listen and understand will impact your grade. As such, I would strongly urge you to take very clear and accurate notes.
Written Assignment
Student’s written assignment should include:
A description of the student’s career goal.
A description of what the student learned from their library sources (be sure to cite sources correctly).
The name, title, organization, address and phone number of the person interviewed.
A description of the method used to contact the interviewee. (Include copies of all correspondence.) Include an account of the success/problems involved in attaining an interview.
A description of the student’s preparation for the interview. Students should include in their report a copy of:
The general and specific purpose statements.
The questions the student prepared to ask the interviewee.
Give an account of what happened during the interview.
Discuss the results of the interview, including:
What was learned about the chosen field.
Any referrals to others to others that were obtained.
An assessment of the student’s likely future in the field.
What the student learned about their own interviewing style and what changes the student would make for the future interviews.
I will expect practical application of the material we covered in class as part of your answers. This means using terminology and theories from the text. Failure to do this will result in a lower grade.
After the interview the student should give the interviewee an INTERVIRWER FEEDBACK FORM and a business-sized envelope addressed to the instructor. The student should not be present while the form is being filled out. Make sure the interviewee seals and signs the envelope on the flap. When he/she is finished, collect the envelope and include it as part of the finished project. DO NOT READ THE FORM. The purpose is to compare your unbiased evaluation with the interviewee’s. Therefore, reading it beforehand will defeat its purpose. I must RECEIVE this form by the project’s final due date for the project to be graded.
When setting up the interview be sure to inform the interviewee of this additional important task. Also make sure to include it in the total time you will need to complete the interview. Don’t spring it on them at the last minute.
