Assignment Prompt: For this assignment, you should create a research question that seeks to
explore a problem within a particular community or group of people. You will answer the research
question in an essay with the help of two to three academic secondary sources (using the library
databases rather than through a Google search). Think about what questions emerged through your
student experiences this semester. Is there a specific issue affecting a community that you don’t yet
understand? Is there a problem currently facing your community? Is there a health-related topic
you’ve always wanted to write about but never could fit into the other assignments? You may pick
any topic/ research question associated , but remember that you must be able to come to some kind
of conclusion about this question in four to five pages. For example, if you are writing about the
parenting community, you could ask one of the following questions: Should I home school my child?
What is the best strategy for potty training? Is a birth plan important? Your answer to this research
question will become your thesis statement and should be placed at the end of your introduction.
In order to answer your question, you must research and find two to three secondary sources. While
one of your secondary sources may be a non-print source (a personal interview, a documentary film,
etc.), at least one of your sources must be a print source of some kind that comes from the Felbry
College library database (an academic journal article; a reliable magazine, journal or newspaper
article; a book; a report; etc.). Remember that many academic journal articles are published online,
but they still count as a print source.

A descriptive title
A clear thesis statement that answers your research question
An introduction that engages the audience’s interest and introduces the topic
An analysis of the question that supports your thesis statement throughout your essay
Utilization of two to three secondary sources that support your thesis statement. You should
cite at least one direct quote from each secondary source. Cite your sources in APA style.
Each body paragraph will have a topic sentence, concrete evidence in the form of your direct
quotation from your source, commentary about the quotation, and a concluding sentence that
transitions into the next paragraph. You should introduce the quote in your own words and
discuss how the quote relates to your thesis statement.
A conclusion paragraph that clearly analyzes the significance of the issue/research question
NO use of I, we, you/your, us. NO use of contractions (example: don’t, can’t). Use full words.
Clear focus, smooth organization, and effective grammar usage as well as evidence that you
are using conventions of English: capitalizing first words of sentences and proper nouns;
placing punctuation marks in the correct position; complete sentences that are clear and
concise and do not require readers to make logical leaps to understand your meaning.
Assignment details: Worth 30% of your final grade. Minimum length is 1,200 words
Your essay must be in APA format. You should use Times New Roman 12pt font and your essay
should be double spaced. You must have a References page which includes your two to three
references used for the paper.
