Write a reflection paper on opportunity to take a critical lens towards your reading and understanding of an article of your choice (from the syllabus). For this paper you will write two sections, adhering to the following criteria:
Close Reading- Choose a quote from the text and engage in a close reading by showing how you have come to understand something important based on a close reading of a portion of the article. In this section, resist the temptation to summarize the entire article or respond vaguely to general themes. Instead, use this section to analyze your chosen quote in order to expand on your understanding. In this first section, please place the quote/excerpt at the top of your paper (with correct APA citation). Your writing should refer to the words and phrases in that quote as you analyze the authors writing.
Argument and Assumptions- The aim of this section is for you to grapple with the argument of the piece and the assumptions upon which the argument rests. This section should address the following: What is the writer trying to persuade the reader to believe? What sorts of evidence does the writer use to support this argument? What are the some of the presumptions on which the author relies to make their point? In assessing and analyzing 1-2 main assumptions, you are then able to gain a deeper sense of what this argument rests upon. In other words, what does the author take for granted in order to advance the argument? This section is an exercise in identifying and exploring assumptions in scholarly work.
For this Reflection Paper, I would prefer that you write concisely enough that you get your point across without repetition and without losing your reader, but also expansively enough that you explore your ideas in an appropriate amount of depth. Therefore, I would say aim for 2-3 pages maximum.
