Students will submit a term paper utilizing the theme “Social Control and American Society.” Choose one area of deviant behavior from this course and designate a particular aspect of deviance and social reaction to that activity. Crime, drugs, mental health, or sexuality can encompass some of those choices. The paper will specifically focus upon the social impact of that activity and specific measures taken to achieve prevention or punishment after the fact. Some recommendations designed to prevent or alleviate the problem should be presented as a portion of your conclusion.
The paper will be 8-10 pages, double spaced, and 12 point type. A cover page is recommended. Please be sure to include references. Use APA style for your citations. Utilization of Wikipedia, encyclopedias, or other such sources is not considered proper and will affect your overall grade on this assignment. All papers are due April 29. Late papers and submissions through email will not be accepted.

Here are some further instructions regarding the course term paper. The term paper is due no later than November 28.The length is 8-10 pages. Regarding organization and content: you must have a narrowly focused topic with a specific thesis question. These are short papers and cannot cover everything about topics such as drugs, alcohol, mental illness, or any other relevant topics covered in this course. You must have a defined introductory section (approximately one page) which offers a discussion of your topic, specific research questions that will be explored, and the significance of the topic.
The body of the paper will include substantive discussion of the topic as centered around your specific research question. I am seeking sources represented by around five primary source books devoted to your specific target and around five journal articles or more focusing on substantial information discussing aspects of your research concern. Please try to avoid extraneous internet sources if you can. You can cite from newspapers (e.g. the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and significant journalist sources. Try to avoid Wikipedia since this information can be wrong or clearly slanted.
The concluding section should offer an analysis of what you found and some solutions for change (if any). The final conclusion should adequately sum up the paper. I will be looking for research quality, effective writing style, and organizational effectiveness when grading the papers. You should start with a preliminary outline and revise as new information becomes available. Please contact me with any specific questions about a proposed topic or inquiries about particular sources that may be adequate for your paper. Looking forward to reading your work in late November.
