The Conquest: Judges-King David

1. Choose one of the questions appearing below. Next, compose an answer of about 250-300 words within a Word document. Then, cut and paste this essay and post it to our discussion board. Do not write a post on a question that has already been written upon until all seven of these questions have been addressed at least once.

Questions to choose from:
(1) Does the book of Joshua portray it as easy or difficult for the people of Israel to take possession of the “promised land”? Explain your answer, giving both sides of the argument if possible.
(2) What is the recurring pattern visible in the different episodes recounted in Judges? Simply summarize it. Does this kind of pattern seem realistic? Defend your answer by citing examples from modern life.
(3) What aspects of his personality make David so admirable? Cite some specific examples if you can. Can he still serve as a role model for modern people? Explain your answer.
(4) What is the “Davidic covenant” and where is it described? Granting that this covenant is not as important as the Abrahamic and “ten commandment” one, it is still very important. Explain why?
(5) Exactly what did David do that was so reprehensible during the Bathsheba episode? In your essay, try to deal with the “power differential” existing between David and Bathsheba. Does this story have a modern ring to it? Give the rationale for your answer.
(6) What aspects of his personality make Solomon worth emulating? What were some of his shortcomings? In what sense may he be seen as a modern person?
(7) Why was the temple built by Solomon so important in Jewish society? What was its purpose? How may this temple be seen as a “ type”?

2. Write responses to the posts/questions of two different classmates (50-100 words)

3. Choose a passage or theme from the passages read this week that you especially liked—preferably one not covered much by our discussion—and in a “final word” post, tell why you found this passage so compelling (100-150 words)
