Course Objective
Analyze state implementation of federal educational governance and reform
States have a responsibility to follow federal laws and governance related to education. At the same time, because the federal government only funds about 8% of state education, state departments of education make decisions about how they will participate in federal educational reform/initiatives.
In this assignment you will examine federal laws and educational reform/initiatives to better understand how specific states are addressing federal legislation. Federal educational laws include the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and Every Student Succeeds Act that made amendments to ESEA. Educational reform/initiatives often change with administrations, but topics they address are often the same and include early childhood programs, teacher education and qualifications. student performance, diverse learners, and school and community engagement. You will examine two aspects of governance and two issues of reform/ initiatives and analyze how one state is addressing these topics.

Your presentation should contain the following minimum number of slides:
1 Title slide – title, your name, course, and date
1 Introduction slide – key points you will make in the presentation
2 Slides – one per each educational governance (ESEA and ESSA with subsections related to Title I, II, IV, V,IX…) and how it is and has been addressed at the state level.
2 Slides – one per each educational reform/ initiative (early childhood programs, teacher education and qualifications. student performance, diverse learners, and school and community engagement) and how it is and has been addressed at the state level.
1 Slide – reflection on your personal philosophy of education
1 slide – References in APA (6th edition) format

Analyze the improvement efforts of the state based on two federal initiatives and two examples of governance selected.
Consider how each initiative or governance and the state improvement efforts align to your personal philosophy of education. What are your beliefs and values related to improvement areas? How do your beliefs and values align to the improvement efforts made by the state?
