Gender and Crime

Below is a list of short essay questions based on chapters 7-12 of the textbook, although you can also draw from the secondary articles to answer these questions (please cite when doing so). Please select 10 out of 12 questions to answer for this exam. You may use your class notes as well as the textbook. Make sure to pay attention to issues of race, class and sexual orientation, in addition to gender.

Identify and explain some of the reentry issues incarcerated women face.
Describe the unique traits that women contribute to the criminal justice professions of policing and corrections.
Compare and contrast risk factors and protective factors in the case of juvenile offenders. Give three examples of each.
Identify and explain two contemporary issues for female inmates.
Identify and describe the five categories of infanticide developed by Resnick (1970).
Discuss how the War on Drugs has impacted female offenders.
Identify the legal variables impacting processing decisions. Discuss how gender and race intersect with these variables.
Describe the pathways to substance abuse among women.
Discuss the prison experience for pregnant inmates.
What are wraparound services, and how can they help female ex-offenders? Make sure to discuss the principles guiding these services.
Discuss the negative perceptions of corrections, and women’s experiences in the field.
Describe some of the unique challenges young women face in juvenile detention centers. Explain how the juvenile justice system can better meet the needs of delinquent girls.

Bonus Question: Identify some of the shortcomings of traditional criminology in explaining women’s offending. What are feminist criminology’s contributions to this field?
