Students will address issues of locality and identity as well as cultural, economic, social and political factors. (Explain SPECIFICALLY how these factors contribute to the music coming out of that region. In order to do this, you will have to discuss the actual culture of that region first)

Students will trace the development of a specific region (Ex: Atlanta OR outside of U.S.) from its origins in the past to its positioning in the present. Be sure to take into account the style before and after media or mainstreaming. Did the style undergo changes as a result of entering the mainstream hip hop world?

Students will also discuss and give concrete examples of the “style” (lyrical content, production, visual representation) specific to that region.
Essays must demonstrate knowledge of the history and concepts related to the chosen region and style of hip hop.
Essays must cite at least three scholarly sources (books, journal articles, videos) pertaining to the topic. Feel free to draw from class discussion and posted articles on BB. No wikis, ask.com or non-academic sources please.
Students must use MLA documentation style to cite sources.
