This assignment allows you an opportunity to craft your own reading and research of a text. For your topic, you are encouraged to use our class novel Nineteen Eighty Four as the central text. The goal of this final essay is to demonstrate your ability to conduct academic research in the humanities to inform an understanding of the text, and then to posit your own thesis or interpretation of the text’s meaning or significance. I would like you to use a theoretical framework, such as the ones discussed in class, to structure your reading. It can be helpful to use theory to better understand a text and the way it can be read. Ultimately, you shall do three things with this extensive essay:
1. Identify a key theory or theories in which to couch your argument.
2. Posit your own thesis or argument about the text.
3. Utilize outside scholarship and close textual evidence to support your own original thesis.
Before choosing your topic, you will be required to write a brief (1-page) proposal that essentially pitches your idea to me. The proposal will be due in-class on Monday, November 23.
This essay will also require at least five (5) academic and credible outside sources to support your argument and engage with the scholarly conversation. Again, you will use MLA formatting along with a Works Cited page and using in-text citations.
