positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group

“Congratulations! You are pregnant with your fifth one”, is
what the doctor told my wife in January 2017. Like this was the story with our
fourth child, who also was conceived on top of family planning. While we
struggled to make ends meet financially, we were also distressed emotionally
for our families in Afghanistan. The unpredicted news of our upcoming family
member added to the existing stress.

I was enrolled in my very first class of college, which I decided
to withdraw. I started driving for Uber on my days off and every day after
work. After working days and nights for seven months, I earned enough to move
my family to a bigger house. I also returned to college after the birth of my
son in the fall of 2017.

Life was normal until my wife developed severe postpartum
depression. She therefore, had to attend emotional and mental treatment
sessions. The disability of my wife’s support with our children brought
turbulence in my work and education. My GPA dropped significantly in
back-to-back semesters. I almost gave up on my college dream. By recalling my
“why”, I reinforced my commitment to education. Quitting college was
losing the purpose in my life, which is to fight poverty, inequality, and
violence around the world. I decided to take fewer classes and focus on
learning instead of graduating sooner. College at age 33 and with five
dependent children was a choice I passionately made.

I reached out for help to my college counseling department, applied
for financial aid and several other scholarships. Federal financial aid and
scholarships helped me spare some extra time for my family and education. I
also applied for a higher-paying position internally at Tesla, and I was
selected for the position that gave me higher wages with fewer hours to
contribute.

Patience, courage, and perseverance helped me realize my true
potential. I supported my wife’s recovery from depression, and she plans to
attend college next year. Besides developing my career in production, I was
able to complete the coursework for three associate degrees with a healthy GPA.
