Event/Exhibit Review

Submit a two-page, typed, double-spaced written critique of each event, as well as proof of attendance This is a college-level fine and performing arts course. Your written critique should contain:
Expectations: This is a college-level fine and performing arts course. The expectation is that
you are attending a quality, professional event. Amateur and public-school style events are not
acceptable for this assignment. “Dinner theatre,” fairs, and “con” style events are also not
acceptable. If you have an event in mind, and are unsure if it would meet the criteria, please
contact the instructor as soon as possible and BEFORE submitting any critique of the event.
There will be a place to discuss events and get approval available through the course discussion
board as the semester progresses.

Your written critique should contain:
1.The facts, expectations and impression with observing a fine or performing arts. Have you attended a performance here before? What were your expectations? What is one clear dominant impression of the work? The dominant impression may be an overall reaction, or you may select one aspect of work as most noteworthy.
2.Description. Imagine your reader to be someone that has not attended the event. Focus on the details of the event. Summarize the work. What element stood out, describe it. Try to use descriptive adjectives and metaphors that capture a sense of the work.
3.Interpret. What is the intent of the work?What was the piece/exhibit/performanceabout?4.Comparative. Is it similar to anything you have seen? Compare or contrast it with other works of art. Include a stylistic, historical, and/or cultural context. 5.Evaluation. Discuss the eventsin relationship to the success ofthe message. Did the event/performance work? Try to be objective. Was it good or bad? Justify your reasons. Why was it good? Don’t forget to include clear and specific examples to support your opinions. You will be evaluating theperformance; the lighting, costume design, and music choices are secondary considerations. You may include them, but do not let them be the focus of your work. Did your first impression change, and why?Would you recommend to a close friend to attend the same event? Why or why not?
