Drawing on at least two plays that we have read this semester, compose a research paper that investigates Shakespeare’s simultaneous depiction of patriarchal rule and feminist subversion. Compare and contrast, in turn, two or more of Shakespeare’s patriarchal figures and two or more feminist heroines. What compels the patriarchs to appeal to and defend patriarchal order? What drives the subversive heroines to challenge patriarchal order? In the plays you choose, be sure to comment on where they conclude with regard to patriarchy and subversion. Be sure to situate your overall argument within the historical context of specifically Renaissance views on gender roles.
