Directed Writing #2
Choose a scientific topic and find two news sources about it from different countries.
Choose local media, meaning a city newspaper, or local TV show or local podcast. This will give you a more focused understanding of how media in that region is portrayed rather than national news.
Also challenge yourself to find countries whose national language is not English. They should still have English versions of their media (or subtitles if video). As we are all connected globally it is valuable to know other perspectives.
Discuss how the scientific topic has been presented by the news in the two different countries.
Your writing should be at least 1,000 words excluding references.
The directed writing should cite at least three sources from class (faculty provided articles or videos)
Use headers for the organization and clarity
Introduction:
Introduce the common subject, name of each publication, author, and date of the content you are comparing.
Discuss how you found the articles.
Summarize each article
Compare and contrast
Examine the differences in style, information, bias, and reliability of each news source.
Discuss similarities and differences between the sources using the “who, what, where, when, why, how” framework
Report on which source is more accurate and less biased – explain why.
Conclusion: Summarize your findings
A Note about Writing: Although this is not an English class you will be graded on how coherent, well-constructed, and grammatically “clean” your writing is.
Make sure each sentence builds upon the last, and that there are smooth and coherent transitions.
Easily corrected grammatical and spelling errors detract from the clarity of your discussion and the impact of your arguments. Please take some time to carefully proofread all materials before submission.
Use 12pt font, Times New Roman with 1inch margins.
Use APA style in-text citations and reference list (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html)
