Overview
Introduction to Sociology Presentation Guidelines
The goal of this presentation is to illustrate a sociological concept from class using an example that we did not discuss in class and did not read about in one of the texts. I would also like you to use your chosen concept and example to make an argument about how the society we live in shapes our life chances. You can find step-by- step instructions for completing the presentation below.
Step 1
The first step is to pick a sociological concept. My suggestion is to pick a concept that you found interesting, timely, important, or particularly relevant to your daily life. Any concept that we discussed in class or read about in one of the texts can be used for this presentation. Here are some examples of concepts we have already covered or will cover this semester: socialization, gender roles, meritocracy, social mobility, social networks, social status, social roles, social institutions, deviance, culture, stratification, social inequality, social class, race, gender, sexuality, concerted cultivation, the accomplishment of natural growth, hookup culture, residential segregation, the racial wealth gap, the gender pay gap, the hidden curriculum, and so on. There are many others you may choose from that are not listed here.
Step 2
The second step is to pick an example that illustrates your chosen concept and allows you to make an argument about how our society shapes our life chances. These examples can be taken from anywhere but should not be identical to the examples we used in classroom discussions or read about in the texts. I would like you to come up with an original example. My suggestion is to search for examples using the news, current events, or observations from your daily life.
Step 3
Once you have a concept and an example you will need to organize your presentation. There are three things to consider as you organize your presentation. First, you need to clearly explain the concept you chose. What is it? What does the concept explain about our social world? Second, you need to illustrate that concept using your example. Describe the example and why it is important. Third, use your concept and example to make an argument about how our society shapes our life chances.
