Early Nutrition & Food Insecurity
Objective: To provoke thought about the factors that influence children’s nutrition and eating behaviors.
Original Post Due Wednesday 12/01 by 11:59 pm.
For this assignment your task is to think about all of the different factors that impact what, when, and how children eat, as well as the consequences of early diet and nutrition on later development. **You will need to do some research on the internet to respond to this assignment.**
1. What are the impacts of poor nutrition on later development? Use examples from reputable sources (e.g., the CDC, World Health Organization, The American Academy of Pediatrics, USDA).
2. Read this (Links to an external site.) article and provide a very brief summary of the findings in your own words (3-5 sentences). Explain what food insecurity is and how it impacts brain development and increases risk for obesity.
3. Describe 3 different factors that play a role in children’s nutrition (e.g., societal level, education, parenting practices, parent’s work hours, type of care, location to fresh foods, culture, etc). Be sure to be specific.
4. Describe how each factor from question 3 may impact the quality, quantity, or timing of what, when, and how children eat. Be sure to be specific.
5. What do you think are the 3 greatest threats to children’s proper diet and nutrition (e.g., what pose the greatest barriers)?
6. Come up with 3 different strategies or policies (at a local, state-wide, federal government level) that can improve children’s diet and nutrition.
Replies to 2 peers due by Friday 12/03
1. Comment with your thoughts on the threats and strategies that your peer discussed. Do you agree? Would you do anything differently?
2. For each factor your peer provided, discuss an alternative way in which that factor might impact what, when, and how children eat.
