Select a news story/series, podcast or documentary from a list we will provide; all of them will be examples of high quality journalism that examined an important social issue at the state or local level. The purpose of this assignment is to help you see how high quality journalism affects citizens’ lives and the operation of state/local government, beyond the function of simply informing people. For the final paper, you should do as much “follow-up” reporting as you can — meaning that you’ll check the original news source for follow-up stories addressing any public response to the problem, discussing policy changes or actions local, regional or state officials have taken to address the problem, etc. Try to determine if advocacy groups or other citizen groups have used the journalist’s/journalists’ reporting in their efforts to seek change. If possible, contact these advocacy groups for interviews. It’s worth attempting to get in touch with one or more of the journalists involved in the story to see if they will talk to you about the impact of the story. In some cases, it may be relevant to contact businesses mentioned in the story to see if they’re doing anything differently in response to the problem the story discusses.
