Compare and contrast the format, development, and usage of Japanese literature from the Heian to the Edo/Tokugawa period.

This assignment is based on your Supplementary Readings 6-19 and our class discussion of
Heian, Kamakura and Edo/Tokugawa Period Literature. In order to answer the assignment
questions as detailed as possible, use your knowledge from class lectures, readings, and use
textual passages to back up your arguments (for citation, just use for ex. “Supplementary
Reading 17, p.22”). Please answer the assignment in a coherent essay. Assignments need to be
typed, Times Roman, double-spaced 12 point font.
Since this is your final assignment and we do not have class on December 7, 2021, please submit
this assignment as a Word or PDF document on CANVAS by 4:00pm. No late assignment will
be accepted!

1) Compare and contrast the format, development, and usage of Japanese literature from
the Heian to the Edo/Tokugawa period. Discuss the similarities and differences in
terms of time period, literary genres, socio-historical background, etc. Refer to
specific works, authors, examples and themes we discussed in class.
