The Warren article is a “Review Essay” that looks at three education books using the language of performance and performativity to think about teaching/learning. He is making arguments about how we as living, breathing, and physically present beings exist in learning spaces. He plays with the word “being” because he wants us as teachers/learners to recognize that we are beings and that we present (being in) the classroom. What does it mean to say that we are marked politically, ideologically, and historically in the classroom?” What does it mean that we are whole human beings? How are our everyday lives, our identities, our realities dis/embodied in the classroom? Provide concrete and specific examples of how you feel these concepts. Be reflexive about how you perform yourself in everyday life and in school. What political, social, and historical context to you and your teachers bring into the classroom and how do you and your teachers navigate all that context? What is produced in the classroom and who might do that production?
The second reading is easier to get through. Dwight Conquergood’s “Performing as a Moral Act” is largely an explanation of the diagram on page 5 of the article. He is writing about how we go about performing “the Other.” How do we go about embodying someone different from ourselves? How do we learn about someone different from us and how might we engage with them, and how do we morally engage in dialogue and performance? How do you see this second article relating to the Warren arguments about embodiment/enfleshment and learning? How do you see your learning (pedagogical experiences) given the moral map? This quarters essay is an (auto)ethnographic dive into your own systems of learning. As the researcher, your own pedagogical experiences are the fieldwork you will call upon to respond to the readings.
Take a stance in this paper. You are expected to write at least 4 full pages, double spaced, Times New Roman, size 12 font (that’s probably more than 1600 words). Wasting space using headings and title lines or adding extra space between paragraphs, among other space fillers that are not your own words, will result in lost points on the final grade. Use proper MLA style guides throughout. Have a work cited page added to the end, use MLA style. Again, do not double space after a period, make sure you use 1 inch margins, avoid adding extra space between paragraphs.
