Discuss your thoughts about the above situations as they relate to your social networks. Consider how your social relationships can empower you or put you at risk.

Follow steps 1 to 3 and then responds to the prompts in step 4.
1. Make a list of people you live with, consider friends, and see on a day-to-day basis (e.g., coworkers, teammates, and classmates). Then do the following: • Place an X next to all the people who live with you. • Place a checkmark next to people whom you consider to be your family.
2. Next, look at your lists and answer the following questions: • How many of these people have you known since kindergarten? • How many of these people have you met recently? • How many of these people would you have included on the list last year? • How many of these people are older than you? Younger? • How many of these people are the same gender as you? Different?
3. The list you created represents part of your social network—people whom you interact with. People in your social network can directly affect your life. To demonstrate this effect, consider how the following situations might change your life: • Your parents’ divorce • A death or birth in your family • The promotion of a good friend that requires him or her to move away • A new love interest • Being cut from a sports team you’ve been on for several years
4. Discuss your thoughts about the above situations as they relate to your social networks. Consider how your social relationships can empower you or put you at risk. Now discuss how youth might experience these situations and how this can put them in the at-risk category. Discuss why it is important to see the “person first”, assess and understand the issues the person is facing, and then plan therapeutic interventions that best meet the needs of that person. Give examples of what those interventions would be.
