Service Learning Final Essay
1. Length: 1500-2000 words minimum. More is fine, although greater length does not
necessarily mean greater quality
2. Due date: see syllabus
3. Grading: Service Learning Paper – 150 pts
Service Learning Journal – 50 pts (note journals do not count toward length)
Directions for Paper
1. Part I: Summary of service. Summarize your major responsibilities for this semester’s
service learning project.
2. Part II: Discuss the connections between your service and the rest of your education
at PC
a. Discuss connections between your service and particular topics covered in classes
b. Discuss connections between your service and internships or other PC
experiences outside the classroom
c. Discuss how your service combined with other areas of your education to help
develop you as a whole person.
3. Part III: Personal growth. Reflect on your personal growth in any of the following
areas. Note: You do not have to respond to all of the following areas, just the ones that
are most relevant to your project.
a. Growth in character. Has this service helped your character to develop in any
way? Has it helped you to become more prudent in dealing thoughtfully with
challenging situations? Has it developed patience? Perseverance? Fortitude in the
willingness to try out new activities? Planning skills? Creative thinking?
Flexibility? Being more generous with your time? Becoming more willing to help
others in need?
b. Professional growth: Have you developed any skills, abilities, or virtues that will
help you be more effective in your future career?
c. Growth in skills. Have you learned any skills that may be beneficial in your
personal life?
d. Intellectual growth. Has the service allowed you to discover new areas of
interest? Have you learned about how community organizations operates? Have
you deepened your knowledge about particular ethical social issues (treatment of
the elderly, education of youth, methods of teaching)?
e. Social growth. Has your service helped you to meet different types of people
from different walks of life? Have you developed skills in working with these
different types of people? Has the service helped you to feel more like a part of
the wider community?
f. Spiritual growth. Have you felt that this service is a way of serving God by
serving others? Did the service offer any other opportunities for strengthening
your own relationship with God?
g. Physical growth. Has your service helped you to develop physical strength and
skills, or encouraged you to lead a healthier lifestyle?
4. Part IV. What did your project teach you about community involvement, citizenship and
civic responsibility?
5. Part V: Assessment of strengths and areas for improvement
a. Identify the greatest strengths of your service learning project in either of the
