Since coming to office, the Trump administration criticised the current trade agreements between the US and other countries. President Trump launched a new set of tariffs, effective 2017, on imports from Canada, the EU and China. The new tariffs placed a hefty tax on products made in other countries and shipped to the US. These tariffs were designed to give a price advantage to local US businesses and make foreign products more expensive in the American market, the largest economy in the world. In response, China, the second-largest economy in the world, and the EU, with an aggregated economy that is even larger than China, placed new tariffs or increased tariffs on US-made products, launching a mutual tariff retaliation known as a Trade War.
For this assignment, you are required to discuss the following:
The possible positive and/or negative consequences that a trade war may leave on the US economy, Europe, China and the world.
What are the possible influences on business in Canada?
How trade war will impact the movement of factors of production between Europe and the US and what are possible consequences.
Do you think launching a trade war is an effective strategy for the US? Why? (Discuss it from the short and long term perspective).
Note 1: Apply the theories of absolute advantage, relative advantage and Heckscher-Ohlin when discussing the first and second points.
Note 2: Support your reasoning with valid references and give examples wherever relevant.

Other high-quality resources accepted, including news corporations (newspapers, network television organizations etc), government and/or academic research papers or reports (available through the resources of the Telfer and central university library) or other sources where liability can be determined (online sources where authorship is unable to be determined and/or held accountable are not considered reliablebut are often highly entertaining)
oMarks are associated both to the quantity and quality of references used as well as the ways in which the materials are used (i.e. use of quotations or other data to support arguments)
oAll external materials must be clearly referenced. Failure do so could result in a charge of academic fraud (see materials included below on this topic)

Arguments and Content of the Essay – 60 marks
oGrades for this section will be assigned based on the extent to which the student has answered the following questions:
Does the essay present a clear and fully articulated position on the topic?
Are the arguments grounded or supported by factual and/or logical arguments?
Have alternative perspectives or opinions been identified and thoroughly discussed?
Have all dimensions of the issue been identified and carefully considered?

Presentation – 10 marks
oAssignments must be free of spelling and grammatical errors
oAssignments should be professionally presented, ensuring that any tables or graphics are cleanly presented, referenced if cited and easy to read (this may require reproducing figures, as opposed to cutting and pasting from source documents)
oDo the arguments presented flow together and build upon each other?

This is a written assignment and students will prepare a report of not more than 7 pages in length (single-spaced, 12-point font, Arial or Times, 1-inch margins, justified). The Essay Assignment must be submitted at the beginning of class on the due day. Students must be prepared to discuss their work when requested.
