Below are the requirements for your third essay. Adhering to these criteria will help you to do well on this essay. You will also need clear, intelligent thinking and writing. Compose an essay of at least four pages and no more than six in which you create an argument from the topics below that supports your thesis.
– Shug tells Celie in Alice Walkers The Color Purple that God love everything you love and a mess of stuff you dont. Argue what role religion plays in the novel. State your idea as an interpretation of the theme of the novel. What forms does spirituality and religion take? How does Celies relationship with God change? How may religion shape the characters? (You dont necessarily have to answer each of the questions. Instead, use them to generate some ideas for yourself.)
– Complete a character analysis of Shug Avery, her arc, and her influence on Celie. Argue what exactly she teaches Celie about self-identity or love and being loved. Begin by analyzing her introduction with the photo Celie first sees of Shug to the end of the novel when Celie and Albert unite in their devotion to Shug.
– What one act performed by Celie in the novel is her most empowering and is the best reflection of her dynamic character? Thoroughly examine Celies change from abused and subjugated black woman to an independent and emboldened black woman. How exactly does the action empower her? What changes in her occur after committing the action?
In your introduction, name the author and the novel (put the title in italics), briefly summarize the plot of the novel (no more than four sentences), and create a thesis statement that answers one of the above questions.
For the novel, consider analyzing the writer’s style with her use of point of view, dialogue, setting, imagery, figurative language, slang, formality, construction of plot, and whatever else you deem appropriate to help support your argument. Do not feel compelled to cover the authors style in one paragraph. Instead, incorporate the examples throughout your essay. Remember: you must make the connection between your examples and thesis clear for your reader.
Incorporate at least TWO sources from literary criticism outside the novel to support your views. Make sure that the sources relate to your poits and that you simply do not use them to fulfill a requirement. These sources should reflect the views of critics of literature. Do not use other fiction and, despite the temptation, avoid any biographical material about Alice Walker.
Integrate your sources smoothly into your text, and comment on them. Cite your sources with the standard in-text and works cited MLA format. Remember that you are writing an argument. That is, you are compiling evidence and interpretations, connecting them through logic to support your thesis.
Toward the end of the essay, consider the broader picture of the theme, characters, or issue while maintaining third-person point of view. The essay is not meant to merely summarize what the authors say.
