Social Media: Gift or Curse?

Topic:
One of the gifts of social media is its potential for democratization: now everyone can be an expert on everything from foreign policy to vaccine science; and everyone can be a celebrity or at least, everyone can be quantifiably popular. Are there downsides? For this topic, provide images and substantial responses on both fake news and your personal social media use. Use the following prompts to structure your answer.
Create and insert a fake news story “screengrab” using https://breakyourownnews.com/ or another generator of your choosing.
Is it a “gift” that anyone online can be a news source and a broadcaster of news? To discuss this question, define fake news and identify the two reasons why research suggests it is so widespread online. In your view, is the virtual realm of social media an echo chamber or a safe space away from the monopoly of mainstream news? Explain with examples.
Is it a “gift” that anyone online can present a scripted and curated version of themselves… and then bask in the “likes”? Discuss the gift and/or curse of the digital presentation of self and the popularity principle as it applies to your own social media use. Provide examples. Do you agree with Rob’s philosophy (from the Week 12 reading) of what it means to exist? Explain.
