a. This sources strength would be providing background information on health and mental health, but it also includes context about Hispanics in the United States and the stigma they have against mental health. A major finding that their study showed that knowledge on depression and mental health stigma varied on the level of education reached in childhood and above. Researchers also found that cultural stigma in medication use like using antidepressants is deeply rooted and shamed upon not even education level has the influence to reduce it. It is relevant in my field of study because it gives me an inside look on how my community views mental health. Some information about the authors is that they work at the University of Texas in Arlington and a corresponding author helped them as well her name is Katherine Sanchez, and she works at the Baylor and White Research Institute. Also, this journal will support my claim because it gives very useful information about Latinos having a negative view on mental health illness and why they do not seek help when needed.
2. Fuentes, Dahlia, and María P. Aranda. “Disclosing Psychiatric Diagnosis to Close Others: A Cultural Framework Based on Older Latin@s Participating in a Depression Trial in Los Angeles County.” Aging & Mental Health, vol. 23, no. 11, Nov. 2019, pp. 1595–1603. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1080/13607863.2018.1506738.
a. This article demonstrates an informative study done on both Latinas and Latinos of an older generation which explores their depression diagnosis and other issues that this older generation has concerns with sharing their mental health illness. A weakness that this article has is that it has a section called “Limitations as opportunities” because when writing my paper, I do not think I will use this section all that often. Some major findings or claims that the study found are disclosing a depression diagnosis with someone is “culturally-ladened experience that entails both emotional and rational thinking around whom to disclose and why”. This source is relevant to my academic interest because I want to do something in the psychology field like become a psychist, and this might help me understand my own personal experiences. The authors of this study worked at the University of Southern California and the funding for this study came from the National Institute of Mental Health. My personal conclusion about this source is that overall, it seems like a well written source that I can use to support my claims when writing my essay.
3. Derr, Amelia Seraphia. “Mental Health Service Use among Immigrants in the United States: A Systematic Review.” Psychiatric Services, vol. 67, no. 3, Mar. 2016, pp. 265–274., https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ps.201500004.
a. This source has its strengths and its weaknesses its strengths are having a lot of statistical evidence which is good because it will back up my claim, and a weakness that the study has would be that it is about all immigrants not just Latino immigrants. Its major claims or findings were that mental health services had lower rates for immigrants than nonimmigrants. This journal is also relevant to the field I want to go into because when I complete my degree to major in psychology, I want to bring awareness that Latinos need to realize that having a mental illness does not mean you’re crazy. The author works for the Seattle University for the Department of Anthropology, and she is referred to as Dr.Darr so she does have a PhD. It backs up my claim with all the evidence the study has on Latinos which quiet a lot than the others.
4. “Hispanic/Latinx.” NAMI, https://www.nami.org/Your-Journey/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions/Hispanic-Latinx.
a. The article does not have any weakness besides not having a publishing date, but the rest of the article is good because it provides facts and evidence on why there is stigma around having a mental illness. There is not really any major claims or finding but there are sub categories like “Poverty and Less Health Insurance Coverage”. Some background information about the author or publisher is that this article was written by the National Alliance of Mental Illness, and this source will help with my claim because it provides many more reasons why Latinos do not get help when they show signs of a mental illness.
5. “Treatment and Intervention with Latinos.” , directed by Guillermo Bernal. , Michigan State University Symposium on Multicultural Psychology, 2014. Alexander Street, https://video.alexanderstreet.com/watch/treatment-and-intervention-with-latinos.
a. In the video its strengths would be that it brings in research that others have done in the Latino community about mental health, and a weakness would be trying to find the exact quote that I want to use in my essay. Its major findings are the effectiveness of psychosocial treatment and an updated state of science with Latino/as. This source is also relevant to my field of study because I would like to complete my degree in psychology. Some background information about the presenter is that he has a PhD. And my personal conclusions about this video is that it will be helpful to have this as a source for my claim.
6. Corrigan, Patrick W. The Stigma Effect: Unintended Consequences of Mental Health Campaigns. Columbia University Press, 2018.
a. The strengths that this eBook has is that it explains the prejudice and discrimination people face when they are diagnosed with a mental illness and the stigma still around mental illnesses. But a weakness would be is that it talks about facing discrimination and stigma as a whole and does not focus on one particular ethic group. A major finding is that Corrigan examines the unintended consequences of mental health campaigns. Some information about the author is that he a psychologist. My personal conclusion about this book is that it can help me get a perspective on stigma and discrimination as a whole and not just part of a community.
7. “Mental Health Challenges and Support: Latinx Communities.” NAMI California, 22 Oct. 2020, https://namica.org/mental-health-challenges-in-latino-communities/.
a. This website has both strengths and weaknesses the strengths are that the website is separated into categories like “Facts about mental health and Latino communities” etc. A weakness would be that I feel like it is almost repeating the same thing as one of the journal articles or its similar. I feel like this source had no major findings because it is just stating facts rather than looking for conclusions. And the publisher is the same one as a previous article that I used from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. But I do feel that this article will help me even though it might be like another one from before.
8. Tania Thorne / North County Reporter Contributors: Christopher Maue / Video Journalist, and Tania Thorne / North County Reporter. “Talking about Mental Health in the Latino Community.” KPBS Public Media, 7 Apr. 2021, https://www.kpbs.org/news/midday-edition/2021/04/07/mental-health-within-latinx-community.
a. This article is basically about a women born in Mexico and when she was young she left her hometown and by leaving everything she knew and loved she developed depression by also being in a abusive relationship that she was forced in and it also provides a video on talking about mental health in the Latino community is like for the younger and older generations.
