The purpose of the application paper is two-fold: 1) to demonstrate your ability to apply communication theories to observations, challenges or problems, and 2) to develop your library research skills. Through library research and what you’ve learned in class, you should also be able to write a fantastic paper. In no more than six typewritten pages (double-spaced, one-inch margins), and in APA style, an application paper does three things:

1. In no more than two pages, it explains one of the theories or models covered in this course (See the theory list on a separate document). Your paper should include at least five scholarly sources. These must be peer-reviewed sources.
2. In one to three pages, it applies the theory or model to a real communication problem or situation, showing how the theory or model can be used to understand what’s going on and/or decide what to do about it; and,
3. In one to three pages, it evaluates the usefulness of the theory or model (optionally, this may include original suggestions for revising or enhancing the theory or model).
**You will also need to submit a Research Log, which details your research process.**

RESEARCH LOG
You must submit the paper and a summary of your research steps.
The log records research steps, and could include sections on:
a) Resources consulted:
· librarians (summary of discussions and/or research appointments);
· Novanet catalogue (list subject headings);
· databases (include a printout of the search history);
· search engines (Google, Google Scholar, search strategies)
· reference material (bibliographies, subject encyclopeadias)
b) Information found:
· list books, libraries, call numbers, format (i.e., electronic, microfilm);
· provide citations for relevant information (even if the journal is unavailable);
· internet sites, justifying their relevance
