It is important that you not only have a collection of great photos, but that they combine to
tell the readers a story.
● Have a beginning, middle and an end.
● Have an idea of pictures you want to shoot, but don’t get locked into preconceived ideas,
let the event unfold naturally.
● Don’t coax, or instruct your subjects to pose for you. Document reality instead.
● Spend time with your subjects.
● What kind of feel will your story have?
● Use all of the techniques learned in class to express yourself through your photography
Do Your Homework
● Photo essays are longer pieces, maybe spanning pages, or even a section.
● Take the time to research what it is you are going out to cover. Why are you covering it?
● you prepared to cover the event? (eg hipwaders etc etc)
● Have an idea of what to expect, but don’t pre shoot in your head!
● Start with a project that you are interested in, chances are someone else will like it too.
Focus on variety
● Instead of aiming for one quintessential image that tells a story, think like a videographer
and shoot a variety of wide, medium and tight images.
● Work to edit to a finished piece that tells a detailed story
